Baby’s Health

All parents want to do their best for their baby. It is a busy, stressful and exciting time; getting to know your baby, establishing routines and wondering what it means every time your baby cries.
There are many natural therapies which can help treat simple conditions in young babies, and often a baby responds very well and quickly to the treatment.  Reflexology and massage are wonderful therapies, babies appear to really enjoy it, and baby massage at home has many benefits for both the baby and parents.  Herbal Medicine can also be used with babies and if you are breastfeeding it can be a simple method of treating the baby through the mother’s milk.

Colic

In young babies the word ‘colic’ is applied to inconsolable crying, that can last for hours. It can be very distressing for parents. The cause of colic isn’t entirely known, but is thought to be due to digestive issues such as a build up of intestinal gas, intestinal obstruction or an allergic reaction to milk (or something the mother has eaten in breastfed babies). This may be partly due to the immature digestive and nervous system.  Colic can cause  fluctuating, intense pain, meaning that your baby cries extensively and without obvious reason. You may notice that your baby arches their back when they are crying or pulls thier legs up to thier tummy. They may also pass wind and get some relief from having their back or tummy rubbed.

Many over the counter remedies for colic are based on traditional herbal remedies. Fennel, aniseed and chamomile have all been used traditionally, taken by the baby or a breast feeding mother (with doses depending on a number of factors). Massage and reflexology can help sooth your baby. There are particular movements that are normally taught in baby massage classes for colic, including ‘cycling’ the baby’s legs.

Sleeplessness

There can be many reasons a baby doesn’t go off to sleep, including hunger, a dirty nappy, not feeling very well or being disturbed by noise. The problem is not know which of these is the problem. Parents can help by providing a relaxing and quiet environment, leading to relaxation for everyone. Herbs have been used for centuries to help calm adults, children and babies, a herbalist or aromatherapist could recommend remedies and how to use them safely for the youngest baby. Massage, reflexology and acupressure techniques could also be useful.

Constipation

A baby’s digestive system is brand new, and can be sensitive as it adjusts to its new diet. The passage of food through the digestive system is not aways smooth and sometimes a baby may have trouble having bowel movements. Just as with colic, simple herbs, massage and reflexology may well help. Relaxation is often the key to stomach issues, as the digestive system is active when the rest of the body is relaxed. Our massage therapists and reflexologists can also show you how to give your baby a treatment at home using their techniques.

Skin problems

A baby’s skin is immature and thin, and may easily develop a rash or eczema. During the pregnancy the baby’s skin was protected from dryness, bacteria and ultra violet light, and at the time he is born the baby is suddenly exposed to them. To protect your baby’s skin, the key words are clean and moist. Our natural therapies can assist to protect your baby’s skin with oils, creams and ointments, and strengthen the immune system to reduce the effects of skin problems.

Cradle cap

Cradle cap is a rash. It is also known as crusta lacteal, milk crust or honey comb disease. This can occur in any baby in the first 2-3 months. In this period, sebum is secreted from the sebaceous gland on to the skin’s surface it can leave a yellowish dry crust. It is found on the scalp, hairline or eyebrow. Usually it gets better on its own, and all you need to do is to keep the area clean. Olive oil is an excellent traditional treatment for this condition, just gently rub it into the affected area.
